Sharing the Road: How To Ride safely

Defensive riding is the foundation of staying safe on the road, especially when you're navigating heavy traffic or sharing space with cars, trucks, and other vehicles. Whether you commute daily or ride occasionally in busy areas, adopting defensive riding practices can significantly reduce your risk of accidents and help you arrive safely every time.

Stay visible and assume you're not seen. Many accidents happen because drivers simply don't notice cyclists. Wear bright colors, use lights during low-light conditions, and position yourself where drivers can see you. Assume that every vehicle hasn't spotted you until proven otherwise. This mindset keeps you alert and helps you anticipate potential conflicts before they happen.

Ride predictably and communicate your intentions. Use hand signals before turning or changing lanes. Maintain a steady line rather than weaving between traffic. The more predictable you are, the easier it is for drivers to anticipate your movements and give you space. Make eye contact with drivers at intersections to confirm they see you before proceeding.

Control your speed and give yourself reaction time. In heavy traffic, slow down and maintain a speed that allows you to brake safely if needed. Defensive riders anticipate hazards well in advance—potholes, opening car doors, pedestrians stepping into the bike lane, and sudden stops. The faster you go, the less time you have to react.

Choose your route wisely. When possible, avoid the busiest roads during peak hours. Look for bike lanes, quieter streets, or routes with less traffic congestion. Planning a safer route takes extra time, but it's worth the investment in your safety.

Stay focused and eliminate distractions. Keep your phone away, avoid headphones that block traffic sounds, and stay mentally present on the road. You need to hear approaching vehicles and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Respect traffic laws as a rider. Stop at red lights, yield when required, and follow the same rules you'd expect drivers to follow. This builds mutual respect on the road and makes traffic more predictable for everyone.

Defensive riding isn't about being fearful—it's about being smart, aware, and proactive. When you ride with intention and respect for shared space, you protect yourself and contribute to a safer community for all road users.
